It has been awhile since I have posted to this blog

It has been awhile since I have posted to this blog. I wrote a fairly long blog post some months ago. It was about work. I never feel very comfortable talking about work. I definitely do not feel very comfortable writing about work either. So I wound up deleting that blog post. Looking back it makes me a little sad that I did that. I put a bit of effort into that post. The process of writing that was therapeutic for me. It was very relaxing and focusing. I am writing this post today because I saw a story about a photographer that travels the world and takes pictures. Big deal, right? Lots of photographers do that now. We are in an age of digital photography so anyone can be a photographer if they’re willing to apply themselves. What makes this photographer different is that he is a minimalist photographer. His mobile office is minimalist and quite impressive in its simplicity. He has a fixed lens digital camera that he uses. He does all of his computing on his iPhone. He has a Bluetooth keyboard. He has a very large power supply to allow himself to not have to hunt for a power outlet while on the go. He edits his photos on his 64 GB iPhone 6 using VSCO. He uses iA writer on the iPhone to do his writing. He publishes his work to his WordPress blog. I have all of these things with the exception of the fixed lens camera. I could do what he does. If only it were that simple. Having the tools is one thing. But tools are just tools. They can remain in the toolbox or you can take them out and use them to do work. To craft something that you can be proud of with them. That is my goal. I want to strive to all of these tools to practice my craft of photography just because I love it. I will post my efforts along that journey. I will also post other thoughts that I have about life here as well. If for no other reason than to give myself a creative outlet.

There’s a Steve Jobs quote that I love. I actually saw him talk about it in a documentary. It is probably one of the most inspirational things that I have ever heard. Here it is:

“When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family life, have fun, save a little money.

That’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact, and that is – everything around you that you call life, was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.

The minute that you understand that you can poke life and actually something will, you know if you push in, something will pop out the other side, that you can change it, you can mold it. That’s maybe the most important thing. It’s to shake off this erroneous notion that life is there and you’re just gonna live in it, versus embrace it, change it, improve it, make your mark upon it.

I think that’s very important and however you learn that, once you learn it, you’ll want to change life and make it better, cause it’s kind of messed up, in a lot of ways. Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.” -Steve Jobs
